IT WAS A bit of a paradoxical way to go about it, but it worked.

Elizabeth wished she’d thought of it before. She had been petrified of the idea of stepping into the role of Mr. Darcy’s wife, because she thought she would have to assert her authority, and she did not know how to do this.

But now she saw that her way in was to simply admit her weaknesses, ask for assistance, and then to praise whoever had given her the assistance broadly. She must show all of the women in the household that she would not disrupt any sort of hierarchy.

Actually, it wasn’t really about hierarchy, Elizabeth didn’t think.

It was about one’s place in the world and about one’s worth. All of the women at Pemberley served an integral purpose to keep the estate running as it did. She simply made sure to acknowledge that.

By the time she got a letter back from Jane, there was no one in the household who still considered her a witch. Margaret reported back that everyone was talking about how they had realized it was preposterous once they got to know her. They all thought that she was too sweet and kind to have any malevolence in her.

The household was hers, so the first battle was won.

And Jane’s letter overflowed with delight. Elizabeth thought that there might even be the sign of dried tears here and there on the letter. They had not spoken in too long, and the last time she’d gotten a letter from Jane, she’d expressed how much it pained her to be separated from her family, and that she didn’t wish to do it, but that she must think of herself as a member of the Bingley family now, for better or worse.

Of course he is perfect for you, Lizzy, Jane wrote. I don’t see how I didn’t see it before, but the two of you are just the right sort of fit. You will keep him from being too serious and he will be exactly the sort of man that you can truly give your heart to, the sort of man you can respect.

It was a reference to a conversation they’d had after Elizabeth had refused Mr. Collins, something that no one had seemed to understand except Jane, but then her sister was the soul of understanding.

The day after the letter arrived, the day of the dinner, Miss Darcy told Elizabeth that she could call her Georgiana, and another battle was won.

She and Georgiana had spent hours with their heads together, arranging the guests at the dinner table. Georgiana told her that Mrs. Balfour and Mrs. Peacock would feed off each other if seated next to each other. “They’ll spend the whole night gossiping. We must keep them apart.” She had also known that the vicar’s wife, Mrs. Preston, had once courted Mr. Balfour, and said that the two of them shouldn’t be seated too close either, for Mrs. Balfour still seemed threatened by the specter of the other woman.
